Medtronic & Animas

Today we met with our CDE to go over the pumps. I still think I want the Animas, but I really liked the Medtronic screen and how you don't have to add the extra step of matching the insulin. Does that bother anyone with the Animas? Now that I got to "cop a feel" (ha ha!) and get my hands on the pumps...I kind of like the Medtronic better, but the remote kind of overrides all of that.

The most important part of the meeting was that Adam FINALLY got to see the pumps and saw that the infusion set has just a tiny tube that would be in him...and he wanted to walk out of there with a pump. :)

Now I just have to pick one and place an order....

  2. I don't know much about MM but we LOVE our Animas Ping and the remote ROCKS!! I had to live a day without it (I broke it and was getting a new one shipped out)...boy did I miss it! It is really nice not having to stop or slow down an active boy to bolus him...you can do it from across the room, no one knows, heck, you can do it while you are driving and he is in the back seat! Anyhow, the part about matching up the insulin doesn't take up much time and is nice when you want to change the amount given or if someone else is bolusing and you are walking them through the steps...kind of a fail safe (if I am thinking of the same step you are talking about) There are short cuts to bolus in half units or full units too without all the steps but I don't log numbers so I go through the whole thing so that I can analyze it later with the Animas software. Anyhow, no matter what you choose you will love it. Let me know if you have any other Ping questions. :)

  4. When we first started Animas in 2009, I felt like it took WAY too long to give insulin. I wanted it to slap the dose in there and let me DELIVER THE FREAKING THING!!!

NOW that it's been awhile, I actually appreciate all of the information on the delivery screen and having the ability to decide for myself if I want to add/subtract a little based on other variables the pump can't consider, such as illness, exercise, etc...I'm SURE you can do this with MM as well, but I don't know what the actual delivery screen looks like so I don't know if you'd have to toggle back and forth between a few screens to gather all the information you need. Hope that doesn't confuse you.

At the end of the day, Sugar (7) is able to give her own boluses. The fact that she "makes them match" at the end provides an added reassurance to both of us that she is, in fact, delivering the dose the pump recommended. Now that she can do it on her own, I **REALLY LIKE** that extra step for safety reasons.

  5. I am with Denise and Wendy...I am an Animas Animal! I love the "remote" feature. The said added, extra step is NOT a big deal. I use both pumps (the Minimed and Animas) while working and I don't notice a huge time difference or inconveniences in that added step ...AND... as Wendy stated, it is nice to just give a little more or less based on your critical thinking skills when need be. Joe can bolus himself...he has been doing it since he was five (with adult supervision of course). The added step doesn't hold him back at all.

I would be happy to provide more information and/or answer ANY questions you may have Stepahnie. Wendy's post that I linked to (last night) about the Animas ROCKS. It is by far the most comprehensive pump post I have ran into out in the D-OC.

Good luck on your choice. Know whatever you choose it will all be fine. They are both wonderful companies with top notch products and I don't think you can go wrong.

  6. When we had animas we didn't have the remote. I know that is huge. The reason we didn't like the animas, (pre remote) is that there were a bunch of extra steps. Three times the button pushing if I remember right. Pain in the bahootie when you are bolusing 8 times a day! BUT, like I said. Before the remote. That thing might cut stuff down. I don't know.

Pump is a win win in my book. Which ever you choose! LOVE Medronic! Easy won out with us. :)

  7. Hi Stephanie! Thanks for the comment on my blog! Your comment about gaining weight and "feeling like crap" made me love you instantly! We will be fast friends! : )

I just wanted to let you know that we have several friends who have the Ping and LOVE it! It was my first choice, but Matthew hated the tubing, so we're going with Omnipod.

But I have not heard one bad thing about the Ping. Not one.

    Hope that helps! : )
